Election Day--the day America might turn?

I have not posted anything regarding the US elections, or my hopes, or my thoughts on Obama, McCain, or Palin for that matter. Intentionally, I suppose. As most people around me, I am not a voting American, but I know the country and its intricacies so much better. While most people here are sure that this time America will finally get it and vote for the right choice (and let me clarify, that is Obama) I remain hesitant and in doubt that it will actually happen. America shocked the world four years ago too. Then it was the fear of the new that was stronger than the resentment and uneasiness (even among Republicans I think) of what was known. And now? A choice has to be made. Voting for Obama would be voting for something entirely new, no? No, maybe not, take away his skin color and he is very similar in personality and charisma and message to the last Democratic president. Or is it exactly the skin color that matters for some Americans, as a symbol of what the US is despite the last 8 years, or as a symbol of what ought to be stopped?

I will watch what I can from here to stay on track. All is in favor of Obama, but not until the last vote is counted can we be sure. We had so much hope last time too... The only thing we are sure about is that after today (or I guess January) Bush will be out! And that is amazing to think about isn't it! I guess that 8-year limit was a smart move after all. I get that now... It is there for people like him.

I wish America the best. It has tumbled way down on the world's popularity list. But there may be some hope. The world I think, would vote for Obama, but it isn't up to the world. It is up to the Americans.

Today is also my mother's birthday. Gelukkige verjaardag mama. She is a beautiful 65.

We awoke this morning to the sound of helicopters hovering over the school across the street from our apartment. There were at least three television vans on the corner of our street, but as far as I could tell, no crowds yet. Why? Obama is voting. Yes, we have great hope in our neighborhood: we are the ones who voted Obama into the Illinois Senate. Now if only the rest of the country will agree with us today, we will have a new kind of leader. Maybe not, as you say, in policies, but most definitely in tenor of why what we in America do matters. Skin color really doesn't enter into it (thank goodness!). It's about how we talk about what it means to be American. His speeches are really worth reading, if you're at a loss today waiting on the returns.

I can finally breathe again. I hope you get to celebrate, with your Jello and dryer sheets, with us, too.
